Lucid Dreaming and Tibetan Buddhism
In the West we tend to look like lucid dreaming as an interesting and sometimes psychological therapy, but rarely such a thing in connection with the acquisition of wisdom or ultimate spiritual enlightenment. In Tibetan Buddhism is lucid dreaming is primarily a tool to achieve enlightenment and only rarely as a form of therapy or as a temporary retreat of the “reality”. Tibetan religious texts go into detail as to give the state of lucid dreaming and how to interpret them. It is fascinating to see both the similarities and differences in our Western approach to lucid dreaming.
Tibetan Yoga and Secret Doctrines devotes a chapter to lucid dreaming. It begins with a description of “resolution” that is to say really just another way to recognize the first step to having a lucid dream, to establish the intention to realize if you’re in a dream and “wake up” in the dream. The proposed method of doing this is to remember the day that “all things that the substance of dreams” and the goal is to penetrate behind the veil of illusion. Then when you go to bed to the Guru that you see when you enter the dream state and conscious enter pray.
Another technique that is described in the text completely different from any technique of lucid dreaming in the West. Lie on your right side, “like a lion.” Grasp both sides of the neck with thumb and ring finger of his right hand to the place where you can feel the pulse of the neck arteries. With the thumb and index finger of his left hand, close your nose and breathe through your mouth open, “so that the saliva to collect in the neck.” This allows you to move in a continuous state of consciousness in a dream. The result is that you have to realize that the content of the dream state is identical with the contents of the waking state are – “. All phenomenal and therefore illusory” It is interesting to note that some teachers in the west observation drooling as an indication that you are working are to give the dream state.
The third method in Tibetan Yoga and Secret Doctrines mentioned are very familiar with Western students of this art. This method is the visualization. However, the visualization differ substantially from those of most Western techniques lucid dream. One is the display of a psychic center between the heart and throat chakra is located. Another reason is the attention to focus on a point between the eyebrows point. The text suggests that practitioners from different temperaments will be more successful if they refer to points in different colors. For example, if you are an active temperament, and focus on the green if you are the “plethoric temperament,” Focus on a red dot.
The text continues with what is on an “as lucid dream tonight,” which describes techniques to avoid, “spreading the contents of the dream.” This “spread” includes you forget your dreams, dreams, the dream as you are aware of and driving over to enter dreams.
One of the signs of lucid dreaming is the ability to control the content of a dream. Tibetan Yoga and Secret Doctrines, in this way by referring to him “transform the dream content.” As For example, he asks, “How can you fear a fire that is experienced in a dream?” And suggests that the fire trampling with bare feet. After checking the contents of your dreams Master Control, you can focus your efforts on the seizure of the various “worlds of the Buddha” of consciousness, which is consistent with our western sky or heavenly astral realms are.
While most of our western lucid dreams leads at this stage to stop, goes Tibetan leader to the lawyer of the physician to recognize the dream state as “Maya” or illusion, and also to recognize that the phenomenal world is experienced as in the waking state also illusory. If this is understood, you need to meditate on the “suchness” of the dream state. Then the “Clear Light, the essence of emptiness” is dawning.
Although you can have more success with Western techniques lucid dream, as you did with the Tibetan technique, keep in mind the end goal can help you better understand the deeper realms of reality. We in the West after centuries of scientific materialism, are ultimately an insight into the nature of reality. Terms such as “pure consciousness” are still familiar to physicists, many of which are beginning to see a giant cosmic consciousness is the essence of reality. There are many ways to the same spiritual goal. Maybe the Tibetans have found a link in lucid dreaming.
