Buddhism in Leh – Ladakh
Buddhism is the predominant religion in the Himalayan region of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh. Referred to as “Little Tibet”, the hill of the city is strongly influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. The region consists of two major sects, Hinayana and Mahayana. Hinayana sole purpose is the enlightenment and nirvana Mahayana believe in winning at all. Buddhist worship and pray to Buddha and many incarnations of Buddha, known as Bodhisattvas. Treat your soul and spirit in a spiritual atmosphere of the monasteries of Ladakh, full of rhythmic chants of the monks.
Buddhist monks
The priests of the monasteries are known as lamas or monks. They usually wear bright clothes and clay has a very simple lifestyle. “Kushok” is the head of llamas, which is the incarnation of a holy man of long ago. They enjoyed the title “Rinpoche”, which means the precious jewel. The monks are preachers, teachers and play an important role of the priest on the auspicious ceremonies such as births, deaths and weddings and the celebrations for the Losar festival.
